The number of people living with the disease worldwide is increasing and the rate of new infections is stablizing in some areas, but the disparity between those needing treatment and receiving it is still unacceptable.(1 - 3)
Similarly in the United States people are living longer and the rates of new infections are decreasing; however, it is estimated that far too many people are still unaware of their status.4
Despite the positive national trends, the South has not shared in this success. Rates of new infections have increased along with the numbers of deaths. Communities of color are hardest hit in this area by the AIDS epidemic. For more information on the South's HIV/AIDS tragedy, please read the Southern States Manifesto.5
AIDS Athens serves the 10-county Northeast Georgia Area. The area served by AIDS Athens has seen the same alarming statistics affecting the South.
