One of the most imporant tools you have in fighting HIV is establishing a solid relationship with your doctor. If at all possible, try to find a doctor who specializes in HIV. It is also important to find a doctor you can trust and with whom you feel comfortable sharing everything about your life and health. You should feel comfortable discussing personal issues like sex and your doctor should be able to explain medical terms in a way you can understand. It is okay to "interview" different doctors until you find the right one for you.

For more information on the clinic, please call (706) 542-8600. These HIV/AIDS clinics, funded through Ryan White grants, are available in each health district. You can also contact your health insurance company for a listing of Infectious Disease doctors in your area.
It is important to remember that although your medical providers have the expertise, it is you that must be the head of your healthcare team. Being informed and actively advocating for your health are the two most powerful tools for successfully living with HIV. Use our Educational Resources listing as a starting point to learn as much about the disease and treatment as possible. The first doctor's visit can be stressful, but knowing what to expect and questions to ask can help ease the stress of a first appointment. Tracking your lab results, medications and medical reports are also important. AIDS Athens has tracking cards available in our waiting room or you can use the online My HealthTracker.
