Living with HIV/AIDS is challenging, but with the right support systems in place, individuals can manage their condition while leading fulfilling lives. One organization that focuses on helping the HIV-positive community in Northeast Georgia is AIDS Athens.
Free, Confidential HIV Testing in Athens
AIDS Athens believes in the importance of getting tested to know your HIV status. They offer free HIV testing Monday through Thursday from 9am to 4pm, with walk-in testing available on Thursdays until 6pm. The procedure only takes about twenty minutes, ensuring that your results are available promptly. Call 706-549-3730 to schedule an appointment. Knowing your status enables you to take control of your life, ensuring early treatment if needed.
The Athens EATS Cookbook for a Cause
AIDS Athens has creatively combined the joy of cooking with community involvement through the “Athens EATS Cookbook.” This cookbook features recipes from local Athens-area restaurants and community members. The recipes have been collected over the past eight years by AIDS Athens board members, staff, and volunteers.
Proceeds from the sale of the cookbook will be used to assist AIDS Athens clients with housing, medication, and combating the stigma and discrimination people with HIV/AIDS daily encounter.
AIDS Walk 2016: Uniting the Community
One of the significant annual events hosted by AIDS Athens is their AIDS Walk. This remembrance and awareness-raising event kick off from the University of Georgia’s Tate Student Center, winding through Downtown Athens. Save the date for the next walk- October 8th, 2016!
Di’lishi Frozen Yogurt Bar’s Community Initiative
AIDS Athens participates in an exciting initiative by Di’lishi Frozen Yogurt Bar. The Athens-based sweet treat outlet allows customers to vote for their favorite local nonprofits with each purchase, and subsequently, the profits are divided among these organizations based on the number of votes received.
The Athens Resource Center for the Homeless (ARCH)
AIDS Athens is also actively involved in the construction of the new Athens Resource Center for the Homeless (ARCH) building. The project is progressing rapidly, ensuring additional resources for Athens’ homeless population.
